finally a pileated woodpecker

cardinal

When we were out looking at Bald Eagles last week we were fortunate enough to come across a bunch of other birds. Finches, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Pileated Woodpeckers.

These first two remind me of antique greeting cards or postcards or old magazines.

Wow. Those pictures are beautiful. The Red Cardinals are really cute, and I like the red bellied woodppecker, but I think my favourite is the female downy woodpecker, though the picture of the male one is a stunning capture. Fabulous. :D

I like the female cardinal the best, then the male downy woodpecker, then the second pic of the red-bellied woodpecker. It's hard to choose though. You take such wonderful bird photos. I think I asked how you do it a while back and now I've got to go back and read the comments to see if you answered. I just seem to scare them away.

All your photos are AMAZING, and the Male Cardinal is absolutely gorgeous, all fluffed up in RED, but my favorite photo is the one with the mourning doves. Something about them been in pairs and fluffing up to keep warm, gives me this warm fuzzy feeling.

I like the red-bellied woodpecker because we don't have them here (or the red cardinals). We do have a red-bellied sapsucker than looks similar.

I've never gotten a good picture of a pileated woodpecker - can never get close enough. They are so elusive. Good job!!!

Oh my favorite is the male downy woodpecker. So cute!

Jenni, Patience. I sit and wait and take tons of shots and try to ease closer while still shooting. Occasionally you get somewhere that the birds are very used to people. All of these were taken at the entrance to a State Park and I assume the birds were used to seeing cars all the time. I sat in the car, 20 feet from them as they moved in and out. In our own yard, I put out feeders and got the birds used to me sitting outside so while they may scatter when we open the door they come right back. Biggest thing, patience.

This is my first time visiting here. I love your photos of birds. They are stunning. I love birds and have one of those linking birdfeeder systems. With the very cold weather we have, we also have a heated bird bath (bird bath sauna, lol). Thanks for sharing these.

Oh, my word, Lisa...these are STUNNING! What a spectacular series, worthy of reproduction. Gosh...a favorite? The first male cardinal captured my attention in bloglines, the rest of the series held me here. They're all beautiful in their own way, and there's a haunting quality to them. I can feel the cold...

Bravo!

You know, all these birds were near the Mississippi River, which has patches unfrozen. That's the only reason I can think of they're still here.

I may have asked already, but can never remember to come back or even where I asked questions. Where do you live? I can't believe the number of birds roosting around your parts. Those are beautiful pictures and I always love shots of birdies where you can see both little legs cocked out to hold up those enormous bodies. Too cute. :-)
