I spent just a little time in the yard yesterday and in addition to seeing my everyday juncos, finches, nuthatches, and downy woodpeckers, I found for you a Robin.
A pair of Cardinals.
A Hairy Woodpecker. He’s been hanging around for a while and I was surprised how much bigger he is than the Downy’s.
For the first time ever, I saw a Brown Creeper, right in my front yard! I don’t care if the picture is fuzzy, it still proves I saw him. I guess the point I’m trying to make by showing you these photos is that when I see a bird for the first time I try to get a photo, any photo and then try to get a beautiful photo when I can. I usually start by snapping at a safe distance and then slowly walk towards the bird. Snapping as I step. Unfortunately, this was the only shot I was able to get of this guy and I hope he comes back.
Fibi alerted me to this fellow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Brown-headed Cowbird before yesterday either. He didn’t seem to mind Fibi scratching at the screen and I shot through the screen. When I opened it, he flew away.
One more first. . .
A Pied-billed Grebe, found while walking along the river a few days ago. Then as I went back to the car I caught a little acrobat.
My husband tells me that “Professional bird photographers set their tripod up and probably wait hours to get the shot.” I have no patience and I have heard some of you saying that you don’t either. My bluebirds, from a few days ago, I drove into a cemetery, spotted one, and snapped from my car, I got lucky, but if I hadn’t we would have missed them, because I can’t sit still.
This was my first bluebird shot, taken through the front window. Aren’t you glad I didn’t stop with the first shot?
So, my point in all of this, is grab your camera and go snap those birds. Practice makes perfect. Some of the best places I’ve found, to find birds easily, are cemeteries. Often you can you can use your car as a blind. Give it a shot, and maybe in a couple of days I’ll have some more tips for you. I will be going to the “Photographing Birds” by Jim Miller, Wednesday evening.
Your bird pics always ROCK! We don't have many birds left around
here....my new neighbor has FOUR cats!! And my other neighbor has two
cats. I think my husband is going hunting...or at least he keeps
threatening....
That's really cool that you live on the other side of the country from me
and you have the same birds in your backyard that I do. Great pictures, as
usual. And I like the new header...
I love your birdies..do you use a tripod or just "hold" the camera?
Beautiful pics! I love cardinals
You are introducing me to so many new birds through your beautiful photos.
I wouldn't be patient enough either.
Sitting somewhere for hours when I could walk and snap a bazillion other
things as well?
:D
I saw a bunch of pretty birdies today. Had to think of you.
No real point for me in trying to get them, I still did with some :)
I might post them in the coming days (so much to post...argh...)
Love your birdie shots!
Great bird shots, I will be heading down to the refuge on Mom's Day. It
will be the height of spring migration, I can't wait (I'll post my
sightings). Bird shots are difficult to get. Nice job!
So, what you are REALLY saying is that I need to go purchase a really super
duper telephoto lens!!! Right? Hmmm...I could tell my husband it was a
Mother's Day/Giving birth to his 3rd child present!!!
I need a better camera with a good zoom before my bird shots will turn out,
I always scare them away. You have some great shots.
Wow. Those are some amazing shots!
I always love your bird photos, especially since birds are one thing that I
haven't yet managed to photograph. Seeing your wonderful pictures always
makes me want to try harder at it. :-)
Those are sweeeeet! I cheated. I took my camera to the zoo today. I
just the guineas. They are so loud and raucous. I should post the pics.
They walked right by my feet! I do have some from the yard. I find that
after a good rain, they really come out. Can't wait to hear about your
class.
Those are beautiful shots Lisa! Did you use a telephoto, I wonder if so,
which one? Oreoles have just arrived recently, and I'm TRYING to get a
shot...
In addition to having slow reflexes, I am very impatient. It's encouraging
to hear that you are too. You're bird photos are always so wonderful. I
can't wait to hear more.
So cool! I enjoy watching birds!! Speaking of I need to refill the bird
feeder!!
Lisa, that first shot is a stunner. I love the other ones following, as
well, but I keep scrolling back up. Beautiful composition.
For not having patience, I'd agree you'd miss so many great chances for
that right shot! I can't sit still either.
I am just amazed at all the different kinds of birds you can see. That
Pied-billed Grebe I've never seen before. He's looking like he's about
ready to jump.
Great shot of the Bluebird giving you the cold shoulder, you can see his
whole back.
These photos are beautiful! I really enjoyed looking at them - and your
comments about taking the pics are very helpful!
This is a wonderful series of bird photos! You have such a wide variety in
your yard. My friend has a Fibi in her yard, but I’ve never seen one in
mine. I love the little acrobat!!!
Hugs and blessings,
I can't believe you got all those shots and know all those birds. I still
can't get a shot of the one who nested on my front porch.
I am THRILLED you didn't stop with the first shot because that last one is
something else! Very nice Lisa!
I love the pictures! And you've shown me a couple of birds I'd never heard
of before.
lisa i always enjoy your bird shots. they are really nice. and i get a
chance to see birds that i either haven't ever seen or don't see too often.
;)
I see all your bird pics....
Then when I'm up at the lake i will see birds and I think of you!!! I try
and take pics of the birds and can't get any good ones like you!!! =( I
love looking at your pics!
More gorgeous photos. I could take photos of birds, but I don't know what
kind they are. I will do more photography once the kids move out and I
want to do a hobby. Now the younger two have cameras. There will be a ton
more photos on the computer.
I never see bluebirds in Madison. I'm gonna have to go sit in a cemetery I
guess. :-)
