When Jack London had his portrait made by the noted San Francisco photographer Arnold Genthe, London began the encounter with effusive praise for the photographic art of his friend and fellow bohemian, Genthe. "you must have a wonderful camera...It must be the best camera in the world...You must show me your camera." Genthe then used his standard studio camera to make what has since become a classic picture of Jack London. When the sitting was finished, Genthe could not contain himself: "I have read your books, Jack, and I think they are important works of art. You must have a wonderful typewriter."
I'm sure a good camera helps....but... I took my first "digital imaging"
class last night at the community college. I think my mouth was hanging
open half the time from shock about all the things I didn't know.
Awesome quote. I'm a gadget freak so I really enjoy talking about
photography gear, but it's never the camera or the lens (although the lens
do help - otherwise, we'd all be using cheap kit lenses). It's a bit
insulting when people tell me my photos are great and they wish they had my
camera in the same breath.
Great post! You must have an amazing word processor!
Brilliant! LOL...so true.
I have the good camera..and a good camera HELPS..but I plan on taking
classes later this spring, I wish I could have gotten it in there before my
vacation..but oh well!
I LOVE this. As someone who has just started falling in love with
photography, I realize that of course the camera matters, but if you don't
have "the eye", then no good camera is going to help in coming up with
photographs that are "art"...like yours are Lisa. (and I'm not a$$ kissing
here, you know I love your photography).
That is an awesome quote, and one to remember when suggesting someone has
skill because of the tools they use. Thanks for sharing it.
