Duck!

posted Thursday, 24 January 2008

We took a chance on a narrow gravel road.  We saw a cache on the GPS and decided civilization lay ahead, as long as we didn't have to pass another vehicle we should be safe.  It was a shortcut!  Then we read the description on the cache page (GCGAX2):

Years ago, my wife and I were exploring this really cool gravel road that winds along the Mississippi River for a few miles and offers some beautiful views that inspire a sense of adventure. The biggest adventure (for us) was when we reached the halfway point of this narrow cliffside road in our big, old motorhome and suddenly Anne looked ahead with big round eyes and said "Now what are we gonna do?!", to which I replied...

duck!

And, a slight pause, a holding of breath, before we  squish beneath the overhang. If an RV can do it we can too. But, do you see anyplace to park to get to the cache? No? We didn't either. So if you decide to go for it can you sign the log for the bandits too?

Wait, so you didn't sign the log? What were the odds that someone was going to come along? :) I guess the real problem is that it's winter. No snow on the ground would've made it easier. Maybe you can go back in the summer...

Is this the road to Yankee Boy Basin? Great shot. If it is, you should to there when the wildflowers are blooming.

When I first started driving truck, I found a shortcut to a chicken processors. It looked good on a map. It looked just like your picture in person. No, a semi will not fit. No, I couldn't back up. I had to wake up my husband. It was not a fun time for all.

Great photo.

Sandy, That would be bad! It sounds like your road was similar to ours in another way as well, no sign at the end of hte orad warning you? ROad goes on about 4 miles with no way to get off, unless you want to go down the cliff.

Jessica - we were scared someone would come along and just wanted to get off the road asap. :) I think we could reached the cache from the car but I was more worried about the picture and worried about other cars.

Swampy - Yankee Boy Basin? Where's that? Nope this road is between two little towns along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin.

If I drove an RV, I'd probably turn back! I'm not one to take chances. My husband on the other hand, would be full steam ahead. The scenery is beautiful.

I love the photo. I have been under some passes like that going through the mountains, but usually the road is wider. Looks like quite the adventure.

Christine the road is so narrow with a cliff on one side and rocks up the other, you can't turn around. You would have to back up, 2 miles of backing.
