Round Robin Challenge: Landmarks

posted Saturday, 26 January 2008

round robin

The Round Robin Challenge (pop over and sign up for this challenge or the next one. ) this time was suggested by Carly.

We have been blessed with temperatures so cold that I have not wanted to take my camera out for fear of ruining it.  So you are being blessed with photos that I took on warmer days.  Also, since I don't believe anyone else participating lives in Wisconsin and we travel all over I will take you on a little tour.  I venture to guess that we have seen more of the state in our four years living here than many life-long residents have.

chatty bell cow

Chatty Belle, the World's Largest Talking Cow, lives in Neillsville, she lost her voice a few years back but she's still worth a visit.  They took away her pals, World's Largest Replica Cheese and Bullet, her son.

tribute

Very nearby, still in Neillsville, you can find the High Ground, Wisconsin's largest Veteran's Memorial Park.

China's Great Wall

This can be found in a little town in the northeast part of the state.  The plaque reads, "Portion of Wall of China taken near Canton, each stone represents a type of the stones used, the burned brick are 1700 years old, donated by. . ."

End of the Trail

The End of the Trail, tribute to the American Indian, in Waupan, created when Fraser was 17 years old.

halfway

Suring, Gateway to the North, marks the halfway mark between the Equator and the North Pole.

largest hamburger

first hamburger

Did you ever wonder where the hamburger was born?  You can find the answers in Seymour, where you will also find the largest grill used to make one large burger and a statue of Charlie Nagreen, creator of the hamburger in 1885.

Largest Fish

You can find the World's Largest Musky in Hayward, where the largest one was caught.

Paul Bunyan

Eau Claire is the home of Paul Bunyan and his Ox, Blue, as well as a logging camp museum.

World's Biggest

Manitowish has the largest Loon. . .

World's Biggest

. . .and nearby Woodruff has the largest Penny.

If I had the time there's so much more that I'd love to show you about my "hometown", but I suppose I should let you go.  I hope you enjoyed seeing a small portion of the interesting landmarks in Wisconsin.

These are wonderful! I love oversized mock-ups of things, and you've got a great collection of them here, well photographed. Thanks for the smile I got from looking at them all!

Wow, they do things BIG up there. We've never been that far north, but I guess we'll have to make it a summer trip sometime. Why did the cow stop talking? (There has to be a joke in there somewhere). Great pictures and certainly you had alot of fun getting all the shots. I do like the Veterans Park and the brick collection. Excellent.

Oh My!

I want to come and photograph all of these wonderful landmarks. I love public art and these are just so whimsical and fun. A talking cow! Fabulous! I would sit there all day and listen to her wisdom. :) Tee Hee. Thank you for the great sights. Ooh I have to ask though... is that Paul Bunyon and the Blue Ox the one from the movie Fargo?

Always, Carly

These pictures are fantastic! What great material for photographing. I've never been up your way but your tour makes me want to add it to our list of places to visit.

Well, I did find some landmark pictures taken earlier so I have a Round Robin Landmarks entry.

I like your "big things' pictures. These are definitely apart of Americana.

These are crazy cool shots, Lisa! I've visited Wisconsin a few times (Knapp and Menomonie), but didn't know there were so many cool monuments.

Oh how fun!!! Lovely tour!!!

I used to write for our local paper back in our old hometown, and I did a series on local historical sites in our area. It was a four-part series and SO much fun to write (I love history). It was even purchased by another newspaper, so I got paid twice for it, which is even more fun, lol.

Thanks for the tour!

Having lived mainly in the west, I wasn't familiar with most of these fascinating Wisconsin landmarks. Thank you for educating me in such an enjoyable way -- with your great pictures!

Those are wonderful. In Alberta, we have the world's largest Ukrainian Easter Egg, we have a giant perogy, a giant kielbasa and there is a town with a giant gopher. There are a number of other giants I can't think of right now as well. Great selection of town monuments.

I have a secret I'm going to tell about myself. I drive all over the place and take pictures of world's largest items. There it's out. I have pictures of the world's largest Easter Egg, the world's largest Mushroom, the world's largest, well, it goes on and on and the collection is not as big as I would like but it's growing. So you just know I loved coming over here today and seeing all your fantastic pictures!

Couple of thing...

#1 You have a lot of BIG things in your neck of the woods. #2 I love that chunk of the China wall. The colors in those stones are gorgeous. #3 When we traveled back from WA to VA we drove through WI. It was fertilizing time so it was manure riddled. We stopped at some touristy looking shop and bought a cutting board with different kinds of cheeses on it for my Mom since the board has WI and pictures. Unfortunately, I love cheese. And the samples were so small I ate them before I got around to giving it her. She never knew any different. Good stuff.
