Secure Fun Monday

posted Sunday, 28 October 2007

secure monday

This week‘s Fun Monday is hosted by Karina.  Don't forget to visit her to see the list of participants.

I want to see your security blankets. No, not the kind Linus carries around with him in the Charlie Brown cartoons, although, if you have one of those, by all means share it. What I want to see are the items you just cannot leave home without. What is it that if you leave your house without, you feel naked, incomplete, not quite right? This can be one thing or many things. And since most of us don't live in a clothing optional society, lets just assume we all leave the house fully dressed...I want to hear about those other things...the extras. The things that make women's purses so heavy and men's pockets so messy (I'm going to get grief for this one, aren't I?) What can't you leave home without? Show us pictures, tell us stories...have fun!

always go with

I have an armful every time we leave the house. These are the simple necessities of every trip, even a 10 minute trip to the store. If I am going to be gone all day I also pack a small cooler full of soda as I hate to pay convenience store prices for it. And you don’t even want to know what I pack for an overnighter (suitcase, computer bag, craft/book bag, & caching bag).

For the breakdown:

  • Keys - obviously a must have unless I’m walking or taking the bike.
  • Purse - carries my driver’s license and money so I can buy “stuff” wherever I go.
  • Camera Bag - since I never know what I’ll run across it goes on every trip. I learned this lesson when my husband and I jumped in the car for a short trip to check on a cache we own. It was about 10pm and we planned on going right there and right home so I did not grab the camera. That is the one and only night we ran into (less than 5 feet from) a Saw Whet Owl. He is a rare little tiny owl and absolutely adorable. I totally regret not having my camera with me that night.
  • GPSr & PDA - in case we decide to cache while we’re out.
  • Cell phone - never know when the kids might need to reach me or I might need help.
  • Book - a book stays in the car because I read to Dennis while he drives.

That’s it, all I need for a short trip. Hope I’m not the only freak. Guess I’ll soon find out.

I should have included camera and GPS on my list, but those seem to get included less and less. I haven't used my GPS much since my old one "ran away" on our honeymoon in the Galapagos, but maybe now that I've got a replacement and some new maps, I will. And I'd love to carry my camera around everywhere with me, but I tend to do it less with the big SLR camera than when I had my tiny point and shoot.

I don't carry my camera around with me as it is so bulky, but I often wish I had it. I recently pulled out my old slow digital camera and plan to keep it stashed in my purse. Hopefully anything good I see will be very still until I make my shot!

You need to "SIMPLIFY". Looks like too much luggage to me. I like the book idea though. I always stash books in the car, just in case.

I love the idea of taking the camera. Have you considered books on CD for your book reads? We've "read" many a book that way.

I love that you read to your husband. My husband and I read the entire Outlander series that way...I had the most bizarre Texas/Scottish accent by the time I was through that only he could understand me, but oh, well.

I can't read in cars it makes me sick. But I think it is very sweet that you read to your hubby! I always wish I had my camera with me. One reason I haven't started taking it with me is I am afraid that extreme temps if left in the car are not good for it and I don't want to lug it into the store.

I started taking my camera with me on road trips and I have a camera phone that I have used. I don't know what my husband would think if I read to him, but I think it is a very cool thing.

I need to learn to take my camera. And it is impressive that you can read in the car! I would be barfing if I tried to do that.

I'd love to take our "good" camera with me all the time, but seriously, ever since my car was broken into, I'm skittish :/.

I think it's great you're prepared....and you're sooo right. The one time you don't take any one of these things, is the time you're going to NEED IT!

LOVE your short but sweetness. I'm trying to take lessons on that ;).

Not a freak at all :) Nice to see someone else bring their camera along, "I" was beginning to feel like a freak over that one LOL Lots to bring when you're a busy woman like yourself!

You have a nice little collection of things to take with you. I like the idea of a book, I sometimes wish I had one when I'm waiting for my mother at the docs. I'm usually in so much of a hurry I fly out the door so keeping one in the car would be the answer.

I always bring my camera too, because you never know when you'll see something you want to blog about! ;-)

My new cell phone has GPS in it...but I haven't signed up for the service yet, I really should because on Friday I could have used GPS.

You are NOT a freak! I take pretty much the same stuff. Good thing I never fly! I forgot to mention my camera when I did my post. I got one of the small Canons so I can take it everywhere with me without breaking an arm.

Now I can see why you always take such fabulous photos, it's well worth lugging your camera bag around with you.

I didn't get very far with visiting Fun Mondays as it has been a crazy week. Even now, it is very late and I am visiting my friends from NaBloPoMo. You have lots of items. I keep more in my vehicle than I listed on my post. The coffee mug stays in the vehicle, but I did mention that.
