Skunk cabbage and Owl

posted Thursday, 1 May 2008

skunk cabbage bloomswho's watching me?

I shared these photos with you on Monday and while searching through my flickr for them I discovered that I had taken them on April 28th, 2007. So, one year plus one day later I decided to go back over.

Hubby had barely walked in the door from work when I asked him to come to the park with me. I grabbed my macro lens and tossed the honkin’ lens to him. The honkin’ lens gets very heavy. Imagine carrying your laptop on the trails, yeah it’s 3-5 lbs, at least. So, I really call it my honkin’ lens, or sometimes huge honkin’, you might know it better as the 100-400mm, my birding lens. And since my left arm is aching, I assume from carrying it too much, I was happy to give it to him in case we saw the owl again.

On the way to the area I needed I saw this cute little snowman left over from our snow a couple of days ago. He looks pretty out of place now.

DPP_0748

What I found was that I was a little late for the skunk cabbage; it looks very sad now. That center bulb thing starts out kind of a creamy white.

DPP_0749

There was plenty around but it’s past its prime.

DPP_0750

Do you recognize this? It will be prettier soon.

DPP_0746

Who do I see?

DPP_0747

Who sees me?

Those were taken with my macro lens (100mm). But Dennis managed to make his arm ache and get a crick in his neck while taking the following, with the camera pointed nearly straight up. And he says he’s not a birder, ha!

So, the whole trip wasn’t a bust. I really enjoyed watching him and I think he enjoyed seeing us again. We weren’t totally surprised to see him because we own a cache (GC12FTW) nearby and often people say they have seen him. I’m just amazed that he stays in this area. I guess he must find plenty to eat or he wouldn’t stay. Maybe he helps keep the nearby golf course clean.

He's a sweetie! How lucky to see him like that!

Yesterday a young red-tailed hawk flew into the tree that I look at when I am sitting here at my desk. I was in awe! Birds are so special! Now that they are coming back from their holiday - the sounds of them singing and talking in the trees that surround the barn just make me smile. I like to leave the patio door open when the weather is nice and listen to them and write.

That snowman looks SO lonely. I never thought of photography as being so physical. You guys must have got quite a work out!! But you also got some fantastic shots.

Oh, I am so glad you had all the lens with you and that hubby was happy capturing these amazing shots. We don't have many owls around here and I haven't seen one since I was a child. (and was a very long time ago!) Thanks for posting these!

LOL I think I have the same lens. Went for about a 6hr hike yesterday, and I was feeling the burn.(I know I am a wimp) but the lens really does get heavy after a while. I need to make a sling for it this summer.. Mine is a Sigma 100-400.. Is yours the same brand? Great owl photos.. Do you think maybe he/she is taking care of babies in a nest in the area?

These are amazing! Snow and skunk cabbage? What a combo. Our cabbage hasn't shown it's purple self yet. There are fiddle head to spare around here, though. I love those furry wonders.

That owl sure was obliging, Lisa!

How cool is that, that the owl hangs out in the same place all the time! Amazing...he's so pretty and your pictures are great. I get Screech Owls in my yard, but only see them at night. No pictures of them for me!

on your earlier post I thought it was a great gray. These new pictures make me think it is a Barred Owl.

I can't believe that you got a poop shot. ha!

Wow, what wonderful photos. I don't think I have seen skunk cabbage before but I have heard of it. We have an owl and at night it bugs the dog with it's "whooo, whooo". She barks like crazy and I have gone out there and yelled at her and could hear the owl. A couple days ago I was walking her and stop to talk to the neighbour. I was telling the neighbour about getting up in the night and yelling at the dog for barking and there is nothing out there but the sound of the owl and I made the sound and the dog started looking at me a bit sheepish and wagging her tail and acting a little giddy. I really think she new then what I was talking about.

I love the different (or pretty much the same) expression on your owl's face. It reminds me of the cat when I talk to her and she just stares and stares and the blank look is then directed elsewhere and she looks back and yawns and does her own thing and looks back with a blank stare.

Hi - loved the photos. My daughter is 48 years old; her name is Lisa Marie - she lives in Ohio, and she does great photography too.

We're all bitten by the 'shutter-bug'...fun, isn't it. I'll do some more 'looking'.
